ALUMNA INTRODUCTION - GALI FROM SHANGHAI: JIANYU'S LONG JOURNEY OF BRIDGE-BUILDING

September, 2021

We are happy to make an intro of an outstanding alumna and a key member to our management council:

"Gali" from Shanghai: Jianyu's Long journey of Bridge-Building

Ms. Jianyu SHEN, a Shanghainese girl, has a far more recognized Israeli name in both the high-tech investment community and the academic community as "Gali." Gali means “wavy” or “my wave” in the Hebrew language. Many friends gave her the nickname "Galili," as the "Sea of Galili," the primary water source of the whole nation of Israel because she has always been the source of creativity and inspiration for everyone.

Gali is full of energy. While she has been working for SinoIsraeli Technology Innovations (SITI) for six years and has pushed many business collaborations between China and Israel, she also devotes herself to researching Israel's religion, culture, and language. She is expecting to receive her Ph.D. in Jewish Thoughts from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem after spending more than ten years in the holy land.

Gali's Hebrew language skills impress everyone. She chose to study the Hebrew language when she attended Shanghai International Studies University in 2008, the year in which the capital of China hosted the Olympics. It was a grand celebration throughout the whole year in this ancient land and it marked the rapid globalization of China. Meanwhile Gali also started her long journey to a land that she barely heard of and a culture that she had never encountered at any point before in her life.

Quotes of Jianyu:

"I made a choice, but it was like destiny, and I more or less followed the flow to be here as of today's me."

"My dream? I will be a bridge to connect Tech and Culture, Modern and Tradition, and of course, China and Israel."

"The more I understand Israel, the more I understand my own culture. People are the same, and we truly are a Community with Shared Future for Humankind."

"Living in Israel is like living under a magnifying glass: everything you do or say, there are people who would pay attention. Living in China is the opposite- it always requires far more efforts to have a chance sitting by the table.

Fun Facts of Jianyu:

1) She spent almost every Passover and Channukah with the Harshoshanim Family since befriending them on a backpacking tour around Israel in 2021.

2) She has been the head of the Chinese Students and Scholars Association of the Hebrew University Mt. Scopes Campus since 2017.

3) Someone on her first flight to Israel warned her of the upcoming complex life in Israel, and she found everything that person said all be true.

4) Jianyu is going to stay in Hamburg for the coming academic year as a visiting scholar for her Ph.D studies.
